Monovar and the surrounding areas are steeped in Spanish history dating back to the "Moors & Christians" era way back in the 14th Century. This is a cultural showcase for those that wish to visit a typical Spanish location that is virtually free from tourism. Those visiting the area will be respected by the inhabitants if they try the language, so get out the phrase books before you head off. The scenery is absolutely outstanding with mountain views, miles of vineyards and local towns. The towns in the immediate vicinity are Monovar, Elda, Sax, Pinoso, Chinorlet and Novelda. The local cuisine is famous for its stews. The leather and shoe and marble production trades are prominent in this area as well as farming. You can chill out, walk, climb, eat out or drive around the georgeous countryside or just do nothing at all. Centrally based on the Costa Blanca all the well known attractions are driveable with Javea, Calpe & Benidorn to the east, about 45 minutes in a car. Madrid is to the North at 3.5 hours and the Costa Del Sol is around 4 hours drive South. The nearest beaches are approximately 40 minutes drive at Santa Pola. The are several other beaches along the coast, some large complexs ans little alcoves if you want some privacy. Get away from the masses and have a great time in the real Spain. the area is accessible from both Alicante and Murcia airports where cheap flights are a plenty, especially off peak season. So treat yourself and have a change from the high rises, drunken holiday makers and get to know what really makes Spain tick "Manana".
